Monsoon on the Delhi-Manali corridor: where it actually closes

Ask most operators about monsoon in the hills and you get "check the weather". That is not useful, because the weather in Delhi tells you nothing about whether a 50-metre section of highway in Mandi district is still there.

The useful version is narrower: on the Delhi–Manali corridor, one stretch closes, and it closes in the same few places. If you know which, you can plan around it.

The vulnerable stretch is Mandi to Kullu

Our routing on this corridor is NH-44 to Ambala, then Ropar, Kiratpur Sahib, the Swarghat tunnels, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, Manali. Roughly the first 400 km — all the way to Mandi — is plains and tunnelled four-lane, and it is not what fails.

The last 140 km is. Specifically, three locations recur in reporting year after year:

Pandoh Dam. In August 2025 a landslide near Pandoh Dam shut the Mandi–Kullu section of the Chandigarh–Manali highway (Times of India). NDTV reported that over 50 metres of road caved in between Pandoh Dam and the Baglamukhi ropeway (NDTV). That is not a clearable blockage — it is a rebuild.

Banala, near Panarsa. A fresh landslide here blocked the highway in late August 2025 while restoration was still underway on the Kullu–Manali side; over 500 roads were blocked across Himachal at the time (Times of India). Banala also appears in earlier reporting, where a rockslide held traffic for around nine hours.

Kotropi, on the Mandi–Pathankot alignment. In August 2026 the road caved in near Chamda Mor, roughly a kilometre short of Kotropi, and the Mandi–Kullu road via Kataula–Kamand was separately closed at Kandhi (Indian Express). That detail matters because Kataula–Kamand is one of the alternatives to the main highway — so in a bad week both the primary and the bypass can be out at once.

The scale, so you can calibrate

This is not an occasional inconvenience. In the 2026 season Himachal recorded 224 deaths across 55 days from landslides, cloudbursts, drowning and road accidents, with 149 roads blocked and cumulative losses above ₹1,121 crore (Indian Express).

And the damage is structural, not cosmetic. After the 2025 flash floods NHAI allocated ₹100 crore to repair the Kullu–Manali road on NH-21, the Kiratpur Sahib–Manali highway, where damage had cut off connectivity to Manali outright (The Hindu).

A hundred crore of repair is the honest measure of what "the highway was blocked" means on this corridor.

What this changes about a July–September booking

The corridor is not closed. It is unpredictable. Traffic moves most days. The problem is that a closure can appear between your outbound and return legs, and clearance times range from hours to weeks depending on whether it is debris on the carriageway or the carriageway that is gone.

Concretely, what we would tell you on the phone:

1. Build a buffer day. If you have a flight out of Delhi on Sunday evening and you are driving back from Manali on Sunday, you have no margin. Come back Saturday.
2. Reconsider the destination, not the operator. Shimla is materially lower risk than Manali in monsoon — it is 345 km against 520 km, and the Himalayan Expressway through Solan is a shorter and less landslide-prone climb than the Mandi–Kullu gorge. 3. Mussoorie is the other low-risk hill option. 280 km, and the ghat is a short climb from Dehradun rather than 140 km of river gorge. Delhi to Mussoorie taxi.
4. A plains-side overnight is a real fallback. If Mandi is blocked on the day, Delhi to Chandigarh taxi is a 245 km day that keeps you positioned to continue when it clears, rather than stranded in a queue.
5. Ask about the specific week before you book. Conditions in the first week of July and the last week of September are not the same thing, and we can tell you what the corridor has been doing.

What we will not tell you

We will not promise the road will be open. No operator can, and one who does is telling you something they do not know.

We also will not publish a re-route table claiming a specific alternative and a specific time penalty for each blockage. The Kotropi reporting above is exactly why: when the primary is out, the Kataula–Kamand bypass may also be out, and any table implying a reliable detour would be misleading in the situation it is meant to cover.

What we do instead is call you. If the corridor is compromised on your travel date we will say so before you leave Delhi, and we will offer the plains-side halt or a substitution rather than driving you into a queue at Pandoh.

The rest of the year

Everything above is July to September. Outside monsoon this is a different corridor — the Kiratpur–Nerchowk four-lane and its tunnels removed the Swarghat curves and about 40 km, and the drive is a comfortable ten and a half hours. Snow season December to February brings its own constraints closer to Manali itself rather than on the approach.
