When to leave Delhi for the hills, corridor by corridor

The most expensive mistake on a Delhi-to-hills drive is not the vehicle class or the route. It is leaving at nine in the morning.

Every hill corridor out of Delhi has a window. Miss it and you pay twice: once crossing the NCR exit in traffic, and again arriving at a ghat section after dark or in afternoon fog. Here is the window we dispatch against on each route, and the reasoning underneath it.

The windows

Three patterns run through all five:

Get out of NCR before the commute. Every corridor has a departure time chosen mainly to clear the exit — Ghaziabad on the DME for the Uttarakhand routes, Ambala on NH-44 for Himachal, Garhmukteshwar bridge for Nainital. These are not scenic decisions. An 8 AM departure loses 60 to 90 minutes before you have left the plains.

Do the climb in daylight. Mussoorie's window exists to get the Dehradun-Mussoorie ghat done in light. Manali's exists to get the Kiratpur tunnels in daylight. This is the part that is about safety rather than time.

Arrive before the local entry restrictions bite. Several hill towns close roads to vehicles at specific hours, and arriving late means a longer walk with luggage than you planned.

The restrictions that catch people out

These are the ones we get asked about after the fact, which is the wrong time:

• Mussoorie Mall Road restricts vehicle entry between 4:30 PM and 10:30 PM.
• Nainital Mall Road is closed to heavy vehicles from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. If you are in a tempo traveller or an Urbania this determines your arrival time.
• Shimla Mall Road is vehicle-free entirely. Our drivers drop at the Shimla Tourism Lift on Cart Road, and you take the lift up. There is no version of this where a car reaches your hotel on the Mall.

For a large group in an Urbania on the Nainital run, the 6 PM heavy-vehicle restriction is the hard constraint the whole day plans backwards from.

Corridor by corridor, what the drive is actually like

Manali — 520 km, 10.5 hours

The long one, and the one most changed by recent construction. The Kiratpur-Nerchowk four-lane and its five twin-tube tunnels removed the Swarghat curves and roughly 40 km. The routing is NH-44 to Ambala, then Ropar, Kiratpur Sahib, the Swarghat tunnels, Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu.

Two viable departures: 4:00–5:00 AM, or an overnight start at 9:00 PM. The overnight works on this corridor specifically because the tunnelled section is the part you would otherwise want daylight for, and it is now well-lit four-lane. It does not work on Mussoorie or Nainital.

Bhuntar airport junction and the Kullu bypass are the summer bottlenecks — both in the last 80 km, which is exactly when a delay is most annoying.

Shimla — 345 km, 7 hours

NH-44 to Zirakpur, then the Himalayan Expressway through Solan. Leave 4:30–5:30 AM to pass Kalka and Parwanoo before noon, which is both a traffic and a fog decision.

The Solan bypass construction stretch is the current unpredictable section. Shimla Lift parking entry backs up badly in peak season.

Stop at Timber Trail, Parwanoo, 270 km in — it is the last properly clean facility before the climb.

Mussoorie — 280 km, 5.5 hours

Shortest of the five in distance but the ghat changes the character. DME to Saharanpur, Dehradun bypass, Rajpur Road, then up.

Leave by 5:00–5:30 AM. Weekend uphill jams on the ghat are the specific thing this window avoids. Library Chowk and the Picture Palace taxi barrier are the in-town choke points on summer evenings.

Be aware: the Mussoorie Diversion chai stop at 245 km, at the foot of the hills, is somewhere our drivers stop but is not a restroom stop. Use Namaste Midway at Mansurpur, 105 km, for that.

Nainital — 310 km, 6.5 hours

The odd one out — it is the longest in elapsed time relative to distance because NH-9 through Moradabad and Rampur is slower than an expressway, and the Kathgodam ghat is at the very end.

Leave 5:00–6:00 AM to cross Garhmukteshwar bridge cleanly. Kathgodam-Haldwani is the choke point and the Tallital entry barrier is the second.

Toll on this corridor is the lowest of the five at ₹280 for a sedan, because much of NH-9 is not tolled expressway. Cheaper tolls, slower road.

Dehradun — 240 km, 4 hours

The easiest, since the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway opened. Leave 5:30–6:30 AM.

One real hazard: the Mohand Ghat curve, where heavy vehicle movement is the issue rather than the gradient. The Dat Kali Mandir rest point at 220 km sits at the top of it — worth knowing that its restrooms are not ones we recommend.

Night driving on these corridors

Asked constantly, so plainly: we will run the plains sections at night and we are reluctant about the ghat sections.

NH-44 to Ambala, the DME, NH-9 to Rampur — these are fine at night, well-lit, and an overnight departure is a legitimate way to avoid daytime traffic. The Manali overnight departure exists for exactly this reason.

The ghat sections are a different question. Dehradun-Mussoorie, Kathgodam-Nainital, Solan-Shimla, Mandi-Kullu: these are single-carriageway hill roads with blind curves, and the risk is not the road, it is oncoming traffic and the possibility of fog arriving without warning. We schedule to arrive at the base of a climb with daylight in hand. When a flight delay makes that impossible we will say so and propose a plains-side overnight halt instead.

Which vehicle for a hill corridor

Choose by luggage and by the ghat, in that order:

• Sedan is fine on every one of these corridors including Manali. The tunnels removed the argument that you need a high-clearance vehicle.
• Ertiga for six people is a plains vehicle. On a long ghat with six adults and luggage it is working hard.
• Innova, either variant, is what we would put a family of six in for Manali or Nainital, and the reason is the third row on a 6.5-hour drive rather than capability.
• Urbania on hill corridors: check the town restrictions first. The vehicle handles the roads; the parking and entry rules are the constraint.

What this guide does not cover

Monsoon. July to September on these corridors is a different subject that needs closure and re-route history to be written honestly, and we would rather publish it with our actual dispatch records than write a general article about Himalayan landslides.
