Innova Crysta or Hycross for a family of six?

We operate both Innovas, and this is the question we are asked most often by families. They seat the same number of people and they cost different amounts, so the reasonable assumption is that the Hycross is the Crysta with nicer trim and you can save money by taking the older one.

That is roughly half right. Here is what actually separates them for a family of six on a long drive.

The rates and the specifications

The Ertiga is in the table because for a lot of families asking this question, it is the real alternative and nobody offered it.

Three things to notice:

The per-km gap is ₹4 one way, ₹3 round trip. On a 560 km Jaipur round trip that is ₹1,680. On a 1,040 km Manali round trip it is ₹3,120. Real money, but not a different category of spending.

The driver allowance is identical. ₹500 a day for both. So on a multi-day trip with rest days, the gap between them narrows as a proportion of the total.

Luggage differs in kind, not amount. Both are quoted at 4 large suitcases. The Crysta line adds "+ Roof Carrier"; the Hycross adds "+ Handbags". That is not marketing hedging — it reflects how the two are used. If you need a roof carrier, the Crysta is the vehicle that takes one.

The third row is the whole decision

For six people, five of the seats are comfortable in both. The question is the sixth and seventh.

The Crysta is a ladder-frame vehicle. It is built like a light truck, which is why it has the reputation it has on rough hill roads and why it takes a roof carrier without anyone worrying. The trade is ride quality: over a long drive on an indifferent surface, the third row feels every bit of it.

The Hycross is monocoque and front-wheel drive, with a much more car-like ride. The third row is a materially better place to spend six hours. On the Delhi to Nainital run — 310 km but 6.5 hours, because NH-9 through Moradabad is slow and the Kathgodam ghat is at the end — this is the difference people actually notice.

AC behaviour, which matters more than the spec sheet suggests

The Crysta has triple-zone AC with digital climate control. The Hycross has multi-zone automatic climate control. On paper these read as the same thing.

In practice, on a Delhi summer departure with six people and the sun on one side of the car, the Hycross holds the third row closer to the set temperature. If you are travelling in May or June with children in the back, this is the single most practical difference between the two vehicles.

In December on the Manali run it barely matters.

When we would put you in the Crysta

• You need a roof carrier. Six people with six large suitcases on a week-long trip. This is the clearest case.
• The itinerary includes genuinely rough sections. Beyond the Atal Tunnel into Lahaul, or unsurfaced approach roads. The ladder frame is the right tool.
• The per-km saving matters and the drive is short. For Delhi to Jaipur at 4 hours on expressway, the ride-quality argument is weak and the ₹1,680 is real.

When we would put you in the Hycross

• Long elapsed drive time with someone in the third row. Nainital, Manali, anything over about six hours.
• Summer travel with children or elderly passengers. The AC argument.
• You want the quieter cabin. On a ten-hour Manali day this is not a trivial preference.

The Ertiga question

If your six people are four adults and two children, and everyone is packing light, the Ertiga at ₹16 per km does the job for materially less — ₹8 per km less than the Hycross. Over a Jaipur round trip that is ₹4,480 saved.

We will tell you when we think that is the right call, and we will also tell you when it is not: six adults with luggage in an Ertiga fits on the seating spec and does not fit in reality. It has 3 medium bags of luggage space. The roof carrier is available and is not a solution in monsoon.

The honest rule we use: six adults, take an Innova. Four adults and two children, consider the Ertiga.

Toll is not a differentiator

Worth stating because people ask: both Innovas pay the same FASTag amount, and it is the same amount an Ertiga pays. All three sit in the same axle class at the plazas on our corridors. On Delhi to Manali that is ₹980 one way for SUV, Crysta and Hycross alike.

So toll should play no part in this decision. The only vehicle on our fleet where toll genuinely changes the arithmetic is the Urbania, which pays roughly double.

What we cannot tell you

We do not publish the fuel type of the specific vehicles in our fleet, because it varies — CNG conversions are common on Delhi commercial permits and it would be a guess rather than a fact for any given booking. If fuel type matters to you for a specific reason, ask when booking and we will check the actual vehicle assigned.

We also have not published a real-world mileage comparison, because that would be a claim we have not measured across enough trips to stand behind.
