Delhi to Amritsar: cab vs train vs flight, costed for real groups

The comparison that actually decides it is not fare per person — it is fare per group, plus the two hours nobody puts in the spreadsheet.

Delhi to Amritsar: cab vs train vs flight, costed for real groups

Delhi to Amritsar is the corridor where the cab-versus-train question is genuinely close, and where most comparisons get it wrong by comparing the wrong numbers.

The Vande Bharat is fast and cheap. The flight is fast and not cheap. The cab is neither the fastest nor the cheapest per person. Whether it wins depends almost entirely on how many of you there are — and on two hours that no timetable shows.

The comparison people actually need

3 travellers₹4,200₹14,400₹4,999Train

6 travellers₹8,400₹28,800₹6,999Cab
7 travellers₹9,800₹33,600₹8,999Cab

Source: Train and flight fares per person from the HireTrust verified corridor record (Amritsar Vande Bharat / Swarna Shatabdi, 5 hrs 45 mins (Train) + 1 hr (Transfers); flight 1 hr 10 mins (Flight) + 2 hrs (Buffers)). Cab figures are the published one-way fare for the smallest vehicle that seats the group, so the cab column is a total, not a per-person figure.

The mistake in almost every version of this comparison online is comparing a per-person train fare to a per-person cab fare. A cab does not have a per-person fare. It has one fare, and it divides.

At two travellers the train is clearly cheaper. At four the cab is already ahead of the train and well ahead of flying. At seven it is not a close contest.

The two hours nobody counts

The train covers Delhi to Amritsar in 5 hours 45 minutes. That is real. It is also not how long the journey takes.

Add roughly an hour of transfers at each end — getting to New Delhi station through Delhi traffic with luggage, arriving early enough not to risk it, then finding transport at Amritsar Junction and getting to your hotel. Our verified corridor record puts the total transit at about 6 hours 45 minutes door to door.

The cab is 7 hours 30 minutes of driving over 460 km on the eight-lane Grand Trunk Road, and that number is door to door. It starts at your doorstep and ends at your hotel entrance.

So the honest time difference is closer to forty-five minutes than to one hour forty-five. On the flight the arithmetic is worse than it looks: 1 hour 10 minutes in the air becomes over three hours once you add the two-hour airport buffer, plus getting to T3 and out of Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International.

Where the cab wins on things that are not money or time

Wagah. This is the actual decider for most Amritsar trips. The border ceremony is at 4:30 PM, roughly 28 km outside the city, and getting there and back is a logistics problem if you arrived by train. With a cab it is a line item on the same booking — we depart Delhi by 5:00 AM, you are checked in by early afternoon, and the same vehicle takes you to Wagah and waits.

Luggage. No weight limit, no overhead-rack negotiation. On the return leg this matters more than people expect, because Amritsar is a place you leave carrying things.

The Golden Temple at the hour you want it. Langar runs 24/7. If you want to be there at 4 AM for the palki sahib, a cab is how you do that.

Where the train genuinely wins

For two people travelling light with no Wagah plan and no interest in stopping, the Vande Bharat is the better booking. It is cheaper, it is marginally faster door to door, and it does not put anyone behind a wheel for seven and a half hours. We will say this to you on the phone.

The one caveat: it sells out on weekends and around festivals, and the fallback trains are considerably slower.

What the drive is actually like

The corridor is NH-44 the whole way — Panipat, Karnal, Ambala, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Amritsar — and eight-laned for effectively all of it. This is one of the easiest long drives in North India. Two places back up:

  • Ludhiana elevated highway entry, which is the reliable delay
  • Jalandhar bypass, worse on weekends

Both are why the departure recommendation is 5:00 AM rather than a more civilised hour. Leaving at 8 AM does not add an hour to this trip; it adds closer to two.

There are two stops we route through: Amrik Sukhdev at Murthal, 50 km out, which is the paratha stop everyone knows and is genuinely as good as claimed at breakfast time; and Haveli at Jalandhar, 375 km in, which is the better lunch option and the cleaner restroom.

Haryana and Punjab road taxes are included. The ₹620 sedan FASTag figure is the one-way total for the corridor.

Note the per-km column: at 460 km this is one of the cheaper long corridors we run per kilometre, because it is fast highway the entire distance with no ghat sections and no altitude. Compare it with the Delhi to Manali taxi rate — 520 km, only 60 km further, and substantially more per km, because ten and a half hours of mountain driving is a different kind of work.

Four adults with a bag each: sedan. Five or six, or four people with real luggage: Ertiga. On this corridor there is no comfort argument for going bigger — the road is good enough that the extra space is the only thing you are buying.

Related runs on the same highway: Delhi to Chandigarh taxi shares the NH-44 alignment to Ambala and is the standard overnight break if you are continuing into Himachal, and Delhi to Haridwar taxi is the comparable distance-and-time run on the Uttarakhand side if you are weighing two options for the same weekend.
